Earlier this year in October Apple announced their latest iPhone 4S smartphone. While the iPhone 4S comes with no cosmetic changes, it does come with Siri, Apple’s digital personal assistant. Siri is revolutionary and everyone who does not have an iPhone 4S wants to get it on their respective devices. An app titled Official Siri for Android is now available in the Android Market. It’s a big, big scam.

Siri has surely proved to be a major selling point for the iPhone 4S. As previously mentioned, inspite of the fact that there are no design changes in iPhone 4S, it has still managed to snag the title of the best selling iPhone to date. Much of its success is credited to Siri, which has literally revolutionized how commercial artificial intelligence works.
The developers of this app call themselves Official App. This particular app itself is called Siri for Android. At this time of writing, there were over a couple of thousand downloads of this app however most people who are downloading it are under the impression that this app can somehow bring Siri functionality on their Android devices.
Now Android devices come loaded with Google’s own Voice Actions functionality. When one does download this alleged official Siri for Android app, all they get is a Siri icon on the launcher. Tap on this icon and instead of Siri, Voice Actions is launched. That’s all what this app is capable of doing.
First and foremost, there can never be an “official Siri for Android” because Siri is Apple’s patented technology. It would be a very stupid move on Apple’s part to port its defining technology to its main rival platform, and something of this sort will never happen. Second, there’s a reason why such scams disguised as apps are able to make their way on Android devices. Google in its bid to become different from Apple, does little moderation over the apps that are submitted for inclusion in the Android Market. On the other hand, Apple has a strict set of rules that app developers must follow if they want their app to be included on the App Store.
We therefore advise you not to download this “official Siri for Android” app as it may be running potentially harmful code on your device and pulling your personal information.
