TinyPNG is a web app for compressing .PNG files.
TinyPNG uses lossy compression, i.e., it reduces the number of colors found in a picture, decreasing the file size significantly.
What’s important, though, is that TinyPNG preserves the alpha transparency inherent in .PNG files.
Actually, I remember using .PNGs in articles for quite a while, but when I realized that IrfanView’s native compressor doesn’t reduce file size as much as I’d like it to, I simply moved to oh-please-don’t-hang-me JPG. Looks fine to me.
