PowerTip, a neat jQuery plugin for creating notifications, allows making desktop application-like tooltips and customizing them.
PowerTip provides numerous ways of customizing the notifications, allows placing different content within tooltips, and even has an outstanding API.
Especially nice is the ‘followmouse’ feature — things like that are often missing even from the most advanced notification plugins.
