Wunderkind is a jQuery plugin for making imagemaps from images.
The plugin is awesome for making product-plan choice pages; pages where you can choose your character for text RPGs, et cetera.
You have to add separate images for the after-hover pictures, and specify the map with some few lines of code.
Although the way of you having to extract and place images seems like quite a burden, you can also be quite creative with such hover animations.
