Apple currently has 361 stores worldwide as of last quarter. They plan on opening 40 new stores in 2012, out of which 30 are going to be outside USA.
The iPhone 4S is a phenomenal smartphone, regardless of the fact that it is just a minor upgrade over its predecessor the iPhone 4. Naturally demand for this smartphone is very high and people just can’t wait to get their hands on it. China is the world’s most populated country and Apple has considerable share in smartphone market. Apple CEO Tim Cook has said that the company did not bet high enough on iPhone 4S demand in China.
Earlier this month the iPhone 4S was officially launched in China. Apple was going to sell its latest smartphone in its retail stores across China. Unfortunately a riot broke out at the Sanlitun Apple Store in Beijing. The situation got so out of hand that the Beijing SWAT team had to respond and advise Apple to close the store. Since then Apple has halted all in-store sales of iPhone 4S in China and currently only sells it online.
Tim Cook said during the earnings call yesterday that Apple underestimated the staggering demand for iPhone 4S in China and didn’t bet high enough. In 9 months last year Apple sold nearly 5.6 million iPhones in China, making the Cupertino outfit the number 4 smartphone vendor in the People’s Republic of China.
Tim Cook also said: “China Unicom continues to be a very key partner,”. “I’ve got nothing to announce today on an expansion there, but as I’ve consistently said, China is an extremely important market for us and we continue to look at how to grow it further.”
The CEO of Apple did not reveal when the company plans on starting selling iPhone 4S in stores again throughout China. Its basically a matter of controlling the crowd which gets rowdy after waiting in line outside the Apple Store for many, many hours.
Apple is bound to release a new iPhone sooner or later. At this point in time it is rumoured that the next iPhone is going to be called iPhone 5. The new 2012 iPhone 5 is widely anticipated. A source reveals that Apple’s next iPhone is ready for production at Foxconn factories in China, and that the company plans on releasing it this summer.
Last year before the iPhone 4S had materialized, all eyes were on Apple to release iPhone 5 which was going to be the next big thing. Apple shocked everyone by announcing iPhone 4S which happens to be a slight upgrade over the pre-existing iPhone 4. Despite previous rumours the samples are not teardrop shaped, which means that the iPhone 5 is not going to have a Macbook Air like shape. The variations in these samples are very minute and there is no substantial difference in the dimensions of all these samples.
A summer 2012 launch is predicted as one of these samples is about to go in mass production very soon. It is possible that Apple may announce their new 2012 iPhone 5 at this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference.
It goes without saying that people are crazy for the Apple iPhone. Whenever a new model is released hundreds of thousands of people flock to Apple Stores around in the word in great numbers. While some Stores are lucky to get through such phenomenal crowd without any hitches, something rather usual happened earlier this week when iPhone 4S was launched officially in China. A riot broke out at the Sanlitun Beijing Apple Store, causing the fruit company to indefinitely put off in-store sales of the iPhone 4S in China.

Since initial stock runs dry after the first day of in-store purchase, then the people who hire these scalpers sell this particular stock in the open market and charge well over $200 per unit. Since buyers can hardly wait for Apple products, they end up buying from them. This has been going on since Apple stepped up its Retail Stores and the only thing that the company has been able to do to curtail them is to bring a policy that each person standing in line at the Apple Store can only buy two units of that particular product on one day.
When the iPhone 4S was officially launched in China earlier this week, on the first day a riot broke out between many groups of scalpers. The situation got so out of control that the Beijing SWAT team had to intervene and direct Apple to close the Sanlitun Store. When the Store got closed, rioters as well as the public started pelting the Apple Store with eggs. Since then Apple has halted in-store sale of iPhone 4S throughout China. At this point in time, the iPhone 4S can only be purchased online in China.
CEO of Apple Tim Cook said: “I think we were all taken by surprise.” He further added that this event was ”unfortunate” and that “we will learn some things for the future and change some things.” He also said that security was of “utmost importance” to the company.He revealed that they have ”taken all necessary precautions” to avoid any such incident in the future.
It’s the holiday season and people are flocking to all sorts of retail outlets for buying presents.
